Tropical foliage plants create dramatic, architectural interest in Florida landscapes. Alocasia (Elephant Ears) love filtered light and moist soil. Philodendrons are nearly indestructible in Florida's climate. Ficus varieties make excellent privacy screens and specimen trees. Most tropical foliage plants prefer part shade to full shade.
The key to success with tropical foliage in NE Florida is understanding each plant's moisture and light requirements. In general, most foliage plants sold at Tropical Yards perform well in bright indirect light to part shade. Avoid deep shade for Ficus and Dracaena, which need some light to maintain vibrant foliage color. Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season (March through October) and reduce feeding in winter.
The Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is one of Florida's most iconic tropical plants, producing striking orange and blue flowers that resemble an exotic bird in flight. In NE Florida's Zone 9a, Bird of Paradise performs as a long-lived perennial that blooms reliably in late winter and spring. It thrives in full sun to light shade with minimal water once established, making it one of the most cost-effective statement plants you can add to a St. Augustine or Palm Coast landscape.
Bird of Paradise grows slowly to 3–5 feet tall and wide, making it ideal for entry gardens, poolside accents, and foundation plantings beside large windows. Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) can reach 20–30 feet and produces white and blue flowers — it functions as a dramatic small tree in the landscape and pairs beautifully with palm trees. While Tropical Yards' primary foliage inventory focuses on Alocasia, Philodendron, Ficus, and Dracaena varieties, our team can source Bird of Paradise for large landscape orders.
Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) are among the most colorful foliage plants available for NE Florida landscapes. Their large, leathery leaves come in spectacular combinations of yellow, orange, red, green, and burgundy — often all on the same plant. Unlike flowering plants that bloom seasonally, Crotons provide year-round color from their foliage alone, making them one of the highest-value landscape investments for St. Johns and Volusia county homeowners.
Crotons perform best in full sun to part shade in NE Florida. More sun exposure intensifies leaf color dramatically — plants in deep shade tend to produce green foliage with reduced variegation. They prefer moist, well-drained soil and benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. Crotons are semi-tropical and may suffer cold damage below 40°F, but typically recover quickly from the root system in spring. They are widely used as foundation shrubs, container specimens, and mass-planted accent borders.
Ti Plants (Cordyline fruticosa) are bold tropical statement plants that bring dramatic vertical structure to NE Florida landscapes. Their long, sword-like leaves come in shades of deep burgundy, bright red, green, and variegated pink-cream combinations. Ti Plants grow 3–6 feet tall in NE Florida and are extremely tolerant of heat, humidity, and poor soil — making them one of the most adaptable tropical foliage plants available.
In NE Florida, Ti Plants perform best in part shade to full shade, making them ideal for the north or east side of buildings where other plants struggle. They work beautifully as understory plants beneath palm trees and as bold accent plants in mixed tropical beds. Ti Plants are marginally frost-tolerant — established specimens handle light frost with minor tip damage but typically regenerate from the base after hard freezes. Plant in clusters of 3–5 for maximum visual impact.
Split Leaf Philodendron (Philodendron Selloum / Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum) is one of the most popular and versatile tropical foliage plants for NE Florida landscapes. Its enormous, deeply divided dark green leaves create instant jungle drama in any garden setting. In St. Augustine and surrounding areas, Split Leaf Philodendron thrives as a semi-evergreen perennial, dying back after hard freezes but vigorously re-sprouting from its base each spring.
Philodendron Selloum grows rapidly in NE Florida's warm, humid climate. A single plant can reach 5–8 feet tall and equally wide in just a few years, creating a lush, architectural focal point. It performs best in part shade to full shade with consistent moisture. Use it as a bold understory plant beneath tree canopies, as a centerpiece in large tropical container arrangements, or as a living privacy screen along fences. Our 10-inch pots are priced at $44.99 — significantly below what most local nurseries charge for comparable sized specimens.
Monstera deliciosa (Philodendron Monstera) is a related variety with iconic fenestrated leaves that has become one of the most recognizable tropical foliage plants. Available at $34.99, it is slightly more compact than Selloum and works well in large containers on covered patios and lanais as well as in protected outdoor garden beds. Rojo Congo Philodendron adds deep burgundy-bronze tones to the mix at $34.99, providing dramatic contrast against lighter green companion plants.
Pair Philodendron Selloum with ornamental grasses like Flax Lily for a stunning textural contrast. The bold, sculptural Philodendron leaves anchor the bed while the fine-textured grass provides movement and softness. This combination works particularly well in modern Florida landscaping styles popular in Nocatee, Ponte Vedra Beach, and newer Palm Coast neighborhoods.
Our tropical foliage range from $17.99 – $89.99. Alocasia varieties start at $26.99, Philodendrons from $34.99, Ficus from $26.99, and Dracaena from $29.99. All prices are at least 10% below Home Depot, Lowe's, and local NE Florida nurseries.
Yes! We deliver tropical foliage via 14ft dump trailer from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach. Delivery starts at $250 depending on your location. Dump trailer delivery is ideal for large landscape orders — we can deliver dozens of foliage plants in a single trip across St. Johns, Flagler, and Volusia counties.
We carry tropical foliage in 10-inch and 12-inch pots. Alocasia and Philodendron are available in both sizes. Ficus and Dracaena are primarily in 10-inch pots. These are well-established plants ready to thrive in your Florida landscape.
Alocasia varieties handle NE Florida winters best when mulched heavily and planted in a protected location. In Zone 9a areas (St. Augustine coast, Jacksonville Beach), established Alocasia often overwinters successfully with just root protection. In Zone 8b inland areas, the foliage may die back but the tubers typically survive under a 4-inch mulch layer and re-sprout vigorously in spring. Alocasia in containers should be moved to a frost-free area when temperatures drop below 32°F.
Philodendron Selloum (now reclassified as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum) has deeply lobed, feathery leaves and grows into a large shrub or small tree reaching 5–8 feet in NE Florida. Monstera deliciosa has iconic perforated (fenestrated) leaves and is slightly more compact, preferring shadier conditions. Both are excellent for tropical landscape drama. Selloum is $44.99 and Monstera is $34.99 in 10-inch pots.
Ficus varieties can grow into very effective privacy screens in NE Florida's warm climate. Ficus Lyrata (Fiddle Leaf Fig) in particular grows vigorously when planted in the ground in a protected location, eventually reaching 10–15 feet. However, Ficus are sensitive to cold — temperatures below 30°F can cause significant defoliation. For a more cold-hardy privacy screen, consider Podocarpus or Clusia hedges, which are more reliably evergreen through NE Florida winters.
Dracaena is one of the most low-maintenance tropical foliage plants available. In NE Florida, grow Dracaena in part shade to bright indirect light. Water thoroughly but allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings — Dracaena is more drought-tolerant than most tropical plants. Fertilize lightly every 6–8 weeks during the growing season. Protect from temperatures below 35°F — bring containers inside or mulch in-ground plants heavily before winter cold snaps.
For shaded NE Florida yards, the best choices are Philodendron Selloum and Rojo Congo (thrive in deep shade), Alocasia Wentii (filtered light to shade), Dieffenbachia (excellent in low-light interiors and covered outdoor spaces), and Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily, blooms in shade). For medium shade, Dracaena Carmen and Sansevieria are extremely tolerant. All these varieties are in stock at Tropical Yards from $21.99 to $44.99.
