Bougainvillea are drought-tolerant powerhouses that thrive in Northeast Florida's heat. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Less water actually produces more blooms. Bougainvillea are cold-sensitive — protect during freezes. They're perfect for arbors, fences, and as dramatic landscape specimens.
Bougainvillea is one of the most spectacular flowering plants for Northeast Florida landscapes. With the right conditions, it produces cascading waves of color for months at a time. Follow these steps to grow bougainvillea successfully in our Zone 9A region:
One of bougainvillea's greatest strengths is its color range. What we call the "color" of a bougainvillea is actually the bracts — modified leaves that surround the tiny true flowers. These bracts are paper-thin but intensely colored and long-lasting. Here's what we carry at Tropical Yards:
Combine bougainvillea with colorful hibiscus and lush tropical foliage for a layered, resort-style landscape.
Yes — bougainvillea is one of the most drought-tolerant flowering plants you can choose for a Northeast Florida landscape. This is a major advantage in Florida, where summer water restrictions are common and water bills can run high. Here's what you need to know about bougainvillea's drought tolerance:

Yes! We deliver bougainvillea via 14ft dump trailer from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach. Delivery starts at $250 depending on your location.
We carry bougainvillea in 10-inch and 12-inch pots. These are well-established plants ready to thrive in your Florida landscape.
Yes. Bougainvillea is one of the most drought-tolerant flowering plants available for NE Florida landscapes. Once established (3–6 months after planting), bougainvillea in St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, Palm Coast, and other areas can survive on Florida's natural rainfall during the rainy season with little to no supplemental watering. During dry months, water every 7–10 days. Slight water stress actually triggers more prolific blooming.
We stock bougainvillea in magenta (Barbara Karst), purple (Elizabeth Angus), hot pink/fuchsia (Juanita Hatten), orange-red (Fire Opal), salmon-coral (Miss Manila), and peachy-orange (Sundown Orange). Barbara Karst is our best-seller and the most popular bougainvillea color across all of Northeast Florida. All varieties are the bract color — the actual flowers are tiny and white, hidden inside the bracts.
Bougainvillea is cold-sensitive and can be damaged by temperatures below 32°F. In NE Florida's Zone 9A, light freezes are possible in December through February. Protect bougainvillea with frost cloth on nights below 35°F. Established plants typically recover from light frost even if top growth is damaged. Hard freezes below 28°F can kill established plants, so site selection near a south-facing wall provides important cold protection.
In Florida's warm, humid climate, bougainvillea is a fast-growing vine. A newly planted 10" pot specimen can grow 3–6 feet in its first year under ideal conditions. Mature bougainvillea plants grow 1–3 feet per month during the warm growing season. Without pruning or training, bougainvillea can reach 20–30 feet or more. Regular pruning after bloom cycles keeps the plant manageable and encourages denser branching with more flowers.
Absolutely — fences and walls are the most popular applications for bougainvillea in NE Florida. Bougainvillea attach using sharp thorns that hook onto surfaces. For wood or vinyl fences, attach wire or mesh to give the plant something to grip. For masonry walls in Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach homes, attach horizontal wires spaced 12 inches apart. Bougainvillea on a fence provides privacy, security (the thorns deter intruders), and spectacular seasonal color.
