Plant in shade to part shade with rich, moist soil. Ferns pair beautifully with palms and flowering plants for a layered tropical look.

The best ferns for Northeast Florida shade include Macho Fern (our top seller), Holly Fern, Asparagus Sprengeri Fern, and Foxtail Fern. Macho Fern is the most dramatic and widely used for mass planting under trees and along shaded fences in St. Augustine, Palm Coast, and Daytona Beach. Holly Fern tolerates the deepest shade and is the most cold-hardy option in the group. Asparagus Fern cascades beautifully in hanging baskets and along retaining walls.
Yes. Ferns are among the easiest plants to maintain in Northeast Florida's humid climate. Florida's natural heat and humidity mimic the tropical forest environments where ferns evolved. Once established, Macho Ferns and Holly Ferns in the ground need watering only once or twice a week during the dry season. During summer rains, they need no supplemental water at all. Fertilize 2–3 times per year and remove brown fronds as needed. That's it.
Most tropical ferns prefer shade to partial shade and will struggle in full sun, especially during Florida's intense summer heat. Direct afternoon sun causes fronds to turn yellow, dry out, and die. Foxtail Fern is the most sun-tolerant of our varieties and can handle several hours of morning sun. Asparagus Sprengeri Fern also tolerates more light than classic ferns. For full-sun areas, consider our hibiscus or bougainvillea instead and save ferns for shaded zones.
Cold hardiness varies by species. Holly Fern (Cyrtomium falcatum) is the most cold-hardy, surviving temperatures down to 10°F with no damage — it's practically evergreen in NE Florida winters. Macho Fern handles light frosts (28–32°F) but may brown in hard freezes, though it regrows from the root crown in spring. Foxtail Fern and Asparagus Sprengeri Fern are more cold-sensitive and may need frost cloth protection on nights below 28°F in St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra.
For Macho Fern, which spreads up to 4 feet wide, plant one fern every 3–4 feet for mass plantings. For Holly Fern, which is more compact (12–18 inches wide), plant one every 18–24 inches. Asparagus Sprengeri and Foxtail Ferns can be planted 18–24 inches apart. For a full, lush look in the first season, plant at the closer spacing. For a more economical planting that fills in over 1–2 years, use the wider spacing. Our sales team can help you calculate how many plants you need for your specific project in St. Augustine, Palm Coast, or anywhere across our NE Florida delivery area.
