How We Transport Tropical Plants Safely

Delivering living plants is fundamentally different from delivering bulk materials like gravel or mulch. Plants are alive — they can be stressed by rough handling, excessive wind, sun exposure during transit, and improper stacking. At Tropical Yards, we've developed a plant loading and transport process that keeps your order in excellent condition from our facility to your front yard.

Loading sequence matters. Larger, heavier plants go in first — typically tall palm trees, large shrubs, and container-grown specimens. These anchor the load and provide a stable base for medium-sized plants. Smaller accent plants, ground covers, and delicate flowering varieties are loaded last, often nestled into gaps between larger containers to minimize movement during transit.

Containers are secured, not stacked haphazardly. Each plant container sits flat in the trailer bed. We do not stack one pot on top of another, as the added weight stresses root systems and can crack containers. Plants with wide canopies or long fronds — especially large palms and tree ferns — are positioned so their foliage doesn't catch excessive wind during the drive. On longer hauls to Daytona Beach or Ormond Beach, we take care to load palms with their fronds trailing in the direction of travel to reduce resistance and breakage.

Watering before loading. We water all plants thoroughly before loading them onto the trailer. Plants that go onto a trailer dry are more susceptible to wind desiccation during transit. Well-watered plants are more resilient, maintain better turgor pressure in their tissues, and establish more quickly after being planted at your property.

Canopy and sun exposure. Our dump trailer is open, which means plants are exposed to sun and wind during the drive. This is generally not a problem for robust tropical plants like palms, hibiscus, and bougainvillea — these species handle direct sun and airflow with ease. Occasionally, a particularly delicate variety or freshly propagated specimen may be covered lightly during longer drives. We communicate this when you're discussing your order.

Delivery timing. We prefer morning deliveries during summer months to minimize heat exposure during transit. For customers in Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach — our longest delivery routes — we typically load early and schedule arrival before noon. Cooler temperatures mean less plant stress and a better start for your new landscape additions.

What Plant Sizes We Deliver

Our dump trailer handles a wide range of plant sizes — from small accent plants in 1-gallon containers to large specimen palms. Here's what to expect for different size categories.

Small Plants (1–3 Gallon)

Hibiscus, mandevilla, ferns, ornamental grasses, ground covers, and smaller flowering plants typically ship in 1- to 3-gallon containers. We can fit a large quantity of these per load — often 50 to 100+ individual plants. Great for mass planting projects, garden bed fills, and hedge starts.

Medium Plants (5–15 Gallon)

Larger hibiscus, established bougainvillea, shrubs for hedging, medium palms, and most specimen tropical foliage come in 5- to 15-gallon containers. These make an immediate visual impact. We can deliver 20–40 plants of this size per load depending on species and canopy spread.

Large Palms & Specimens (25+ Gallon)

Larger palm trees — queen palms, sabal palms, windmill palms, and similar — arrive in 25-gallon to 100-gallon containers. We can deliver 5–15 large palms per load. These make the biggest statement and establish the quickest of all plants due to their robust root systems.

Plant Care Immediately After Delivery

Getting your tropical plants established successfully starts the moment they arrive. Here's what to do in the first 24–48 hours after your delivery to give every plant the best possible start.

Water immediately. Even though we water before loading, plants in containers sitting on a trailer — especially during summer months — can dry out during transit. As soon as plants are placed, water each container thoroughly until water flows from the drainage holes. This is especially important for palms, which need consistent moisture during the establishment phase.

Don't leave plants in containers in full sun. If you can't plant right away, move containerized plants to partial shade. Direct Florida sun on a black nursery container can heat the root zone to damaging temperatures within hours. A shaded garage, under a carport, or beneath a large tree works fine for a day or two while you prepare your planting sites.

Plant within 72 hours when possible. Container-grown tropical plants can be held for several days in good condition if watered daily, but the sooner they go into the ground the better. Roots begin seeking new soil within days of delivery, and plants that go in quickly establish faster and suffer less transplant stress.

Fertilize at planting — not before. Wait until you've planted to fertilize. Fertilizing stressed, just-delivered plants can burn tender roots. Use a slow-release granular fertilizer appropriate for the species after planting, following label directions. Our team can recommend specific products for your plant selections when you call.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tropical Plant Delivery

Do you deliver tropical plants to Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach?

Yes — we deliver tropical plants to Daytona Beach ($375 delivery fee), Ormond Beach ($350), Ormond-by-the-Sea, Holly Hill, Port Orange, and South Daytona. Our full coverage area extends from Ponte Vedra in the north all the way through Volusia County. Call 772-267-1611 to schedule your Volusia County plant delivery.

Can you deliver large palm trees by dump trailer?

Yes — our dump trailer is fully capable of transporting large palm trees including queen palms, sabal palms, canary island date palms, and windmill palms in 25-gallon to 100-gallon containers. We load large palms carefully at the front of the trailer and secure them to minimize movement. Tall palms may need to be tipped slightly during loading — this is temporary and does not damage the tree.

How many plants can you fit in one delivery?

It depends on plant size. For small 1-gallon accent plants, we can fit 80–120 per load. For 3-gallon shrubs or hibiscus, expect 40–60 per load. For large 15-gallon specimens, roughly 15–25 per load. Large palms in 25–45 gallon containers average 8–15 per trip. For mixed orders combining sizes, we calculate the combination when you call with your list.

What is the minimum order size for tropical plant delivery?

There is no minimum plant count, but the delivery fee is the same regardless of order size. A $250 delivery to St. Augustine covers 1 plant or 100 plants — same fee. For maximum value, combine your plant order with coquina shell or order a larger selection of plants in one trip to spread the delivery cost.

Do the plants arrive healthy after dump trailer transport?

Yes — we've refined our loading and transport process specifically to keep plants healthy. We water before loading, load in a sequence that minimizes stress, and time deliveries to avoid peak midday heat in summer. Tropical plants are robust travelers — species like palms, hibiscus, bougainvillea, and most foliage plants handle transit extremely well. We stand behind the health of every plant we deliver.

Can I combine a plant order with coquina shell in the same delivery?

Absolutely — and this is one of the most popular ways customers order. We load coquina shell at the front of the trailer (where dumping places it nearest the target) and position plants where they can be unloaded by hand. One flat delivery fee covers both. It's the most cost-efficient way to get your full landscape transformation in one trip. See our coquina shell delivery page for shell pricing.

Do you deliver tropical plants to Palm Coast in Flagler County?

Yes — Palm Coast is one of our regular delivery destinations. The delivery fee to Palm Coast is $300 per trip. We serve all Palm Coast neighborhoods including the Palm Coast Plantation, Hammock, Grand Haven, and the various "B", "C", "F", "P", and "R" section neighborhoods. Flagler Beach, Bunnell, and Beverly Beach are also within our delivery area at the same $300 fee. Visit our Flagler County page for more information.
